Straight to Gay by Audrey Kouyoumdjian

Published in 2018, Straight to Gay: Coming Out Saved My Life Creating Joy and Health by Audrey Kouyoumdjian is the second [*] memoir written by an Armenian-American who identifies as a Lesbian.

Kouyoumdjian earned her B.Sc. PT degree from the University of Toronto. She owned and operated a multidisciplinary rehabilitation practice. She now works as an in-home physiotherapist treating patients with her hands, heart and spirit. In addition to being an author, she is a physiotherapy lecturer and business entrepreneur. Kouyoumdjian lives in Toronto, Canada with her partner of 15 years Carol Pasternak.

It was the early 1980’s, and I was confused, not understanding the meaning of my feelings, and certainly not even considering terms like homosexuality, gay, or lesbian. I just knew I wanted and needed this relationship. I wanted Her.

A kiss changed Kouyoumdjian’s life. She was training to be a physiotherapist and her bond with best friend and roommate deepened into something new. From there, they mapped out their lives to include both their dreams of marriage and children, but also time for them to be together.

Kouyoumdjian describes her memoir as a “tell-all expose,” that she hopes will awaken the reader’s “own courage to change situations you thought were permanent, and ultimately live your authentic life of joy and good health.”
